Explosions

Electrical
Our Forensic Electrical Engineers investigate electrical systems and appliances for the possibility of a malfunction.

Electrical Engineering deals with the technology of electricity, especially the design and application of circuitry and equipment for machine control, communications and power generation and distribution. Forensic electrical engineers investigate electrical systems, components and appliances to determine whether or not there was a malfunction. Additionally, electrical engineers evaluate damage attributed to lightning, electrical shock and electrocutions.

Failure Analysis - Inspections are made of suspected failed electrical products and components to determine if a failure happened and, if so, to identify the failure and its cause. The investigation may provide input into the identification of the responsible parties for potential subrogation.

Product Liability - Products involved in a loss are examined to determine if potential subrogation action is warranted or to defend against such action.

Electrical Accidents (Electrocution & Electrical Shock) - Investigation into the circumstances and evaluation of the electrical apparatus involved in arch flash, electrocution or shock can determine the sequence of events and the cause of the event and can identify potential responsible parties.

Investigation of Electrical Failures Suspected of Causing a Fire - By investigating electrical distribution systems and utilizing equipment to establish the cause of damage, KIB engineers can identify electrical fire cause and determine potential responsible parties.

Lightning Evaluations - Evaluation of damage suspected to be due to lightning can establish whether or not the damage is in fact due to lightning, power surge or other cause.

Forensic Investigations also include, but are not limited to:
    Electrical Code Complaince & Violations
    Laboratory Testing & Reconstruction
    Product Research & Recalls

response teams consist of fire and explosion experts, engineers and other technicians that can rapidly respond to and document the causes of both small and large explosions.

For example, forensic mechanical engineers work with vehicles, engines, boilers, cranes, elevators, furnaces, air conditioners, plumbing/piping systems, air/liquid/gas handling equipment, industrial machinery, combustion equipment, fireplaces, material handling equipment, winches, hydraulic/pneumatic systems, etc.

Failure Analysis - KIB engineers can examine a suspected failed device to determine if, why and how it failed. These failure causes often point to responsible parties who can be pursued to recover losses.

Damage Analysis - After a potentially damaging event, inspections can be conducted to determine which components are damaged and which are not so that the actual scope of the loss can be established.

Salvage and Repair Assessment - KIB engineers can inspect damaged equipment to determine if it can be economically repaired. In addition, they can set up a proposed repair plan.

Cargo and Shipping Losses - Equipment damaged during shipment can be evaluated to determine the adequacy of the packaging and/or restraints and the extent of the resulting damage.

Vehicular Accident Reconstruction - KIB engineers can scientifically determination the actual facts of a vehicular collision when there are: discrepancies in the witness's accounts, vital liability questions that cannot be answered by witnesses or a witness who is possibly attempting to defraud an insurance carrier.

Laboratory and Field Inspection - Inspections and analysis are offered for all sizes of equipment including small household appliances. We want to work with you to provide the most cost-effective service possible. For example, it is often more cost effective to ship small items to our laboratory, while our engineers can perform inspections on large items at the loss site.

Our Forensic Automotive Engineers specialize in determining automotive systems contributed to a loss.

For example, forensic automotive engineers work with cars, trucks, heavy equipment, vessels, etc.

KIB employs automotive experts, mechanical and electrical engineers, and investigators specially trained to handle your automotive claims. KIB has developed systematic vehicle inspection methods which assure that important facts are discovered -- and reported to the client.

On-site examination of automotive, marine, heavy equipment or other vehicles can be handled by our investigators located strategically throughout the United States and can be supported by our team of forensic automotive engineers.

Single Vehicle Wrecks - Single vehicle wrecks are a common event. In many of these wrecks a driver says that the car went out of control because of a mechanical defect in the steering, brakes, suspension or throttle.

KIB can answer the question of whether or not a defect that could have caused the reported wreck is actually present in the vehicle.

Theft and Lock Examination - A growing number of vehicle thefts are reported each year - some legitimate, some fraudulent. Did the claim occur as reported or was it manufactured?

At KIB, forensic automotive engineers can perform detailed lock examinations to determine whether or not there is evidence that security devices were compromised, manipulated, picked or by-passed.

Armed with the results of our analyses, you can evaluate legitimate and fraudulent claims with more certainty and effectiveness than ever before.

Soft Tissue Claims - Substantial medical claims after minor vehicle accidents are a growing challenge for the insurance industry. Addressing this challenge requires cost-effective technical support to distinguish those wrecks with injury-producing potential from those without.

subrogation
KIB assists the litigator by having highly qualified professionals conduct a review of documents and reports issued by other parties in the litigation. The person conducting the evaluation examines all aspects of the case to determine the reliability of the information. The client receives valuable information regarding the completeness and accuracy of the other party's case and information that can be used in questioning the other party's experts.

Litigation Assistance

Liability Defense
The possibilities of a specific product being responsible or not responsible for an incident or failure are determined through research and testing. National databases are searched to determine availability of information on specific products. The type of damage to the product is examined in an effort to determine whether or not a failure occurred and in cases of failure the exact cause. In some cases testing of like products can be performed in an effort to duplicate the event.

Arson Investigations
Was the fire accidental or was it arson?

If arson is suspected, you should promptly click on "New Assignment" and get KIB on the case.

There are many red flags of arson that an adjuster can identify at his/her desk when the loss is reported. There are other red flags at the scene that can be discovered to determine whether or not further investigation is warranted.

Even if a fire is determined to be arson there are often many avenues of subrogation. When KIB is conducting the investigation, even in cases of arson, the client can expect all subrogation avenues to be fully investigated and documented.

If there are indicators that the fire did not occur as reported, then an independent fire expert should be assigned to conduct the scene examination. If the fire is determined to be arson by the local officials or by an independent fire expert, KIB recommends letting the independent investigator do a complete and thorough follow-up investigation.

Arsonists beware; when KIB is on the case we will turn over every leaf and uncover every fact about the claim.

Cargo
Cargo losses and theft can be very expensive for insurers, manufacturers and carriers. The risks of transit are higher than you may think. Long voyages, bad weather, extensive moving and shifting of cargo can all contribute to the potential for loss or damage. When damages or theft occurs, it should be investigated to determine the origin and cause of the loss.

During a cargo loss or theft claim investigation, the scene is examined, photographed and diagrammed and any evidence is collected.

In theft or damage cases the scene may provide the only evidence to connect the perpetrator to the crime. If the burglary or theft or damage did not occur as reported, the scene examination may reveal the claim was fraudulent.

Fire Scene Red Flags
Claims adjusters, if you see any of the following things at your loss scene, you should promptly click "New Assignment" and get a KIB orgin & cause expert on the case:

    Large amount of damage
    Low burning
    Unidentifiable point of origin
    No "V" burn patterns present
    Lack of accidental causes
    Separate and unconnected fires
Unusual burn patterns and high heat stress
    Windows blown away from structure
    Evidence of forced entry
    Missing inventory
Missing personal items such as photos, bibles, yearbooks, weapons, jewelry
    Evidence of a previous fire
    Unkept yard
    "For sale" signs
    Fuel cans
Fire extending beyond the perimeter of the structure.

Claim File Red Flags
If it appears that the insured will benefit in any manner from the fire, even indirectly, the fire warrants further investigation. KIB will provide its clients with internal audits of claim files to identify and weigh indicators of fraud. Simply call the closest KIB Service Center and speak to one of our Territorial Managers.

Burglary & Theft Investigations
In the event of a theft or burglary, an investigation is warranted.

The claims adjuster should be aware of the characteristics of an average burglary so that anything unusual will be a red flag.

The average burglary lasts only four minutes and less than $2,100.00 of merchandise is taken and is done by someone who lives within a mile of the crime scene.

Witness Location
Many of our employees are former law enforcement detectives with experience in burglary and theft investigations and other types of investigations where fraud may be suspected.

Using means from technical services and sound detective work, our investigators can locate witnesses, interview them and take statements when necessary. All investigators have state-of-the-art recording equipment and are thoroughly trained in statement taking.

Many burglaries and thefts have been resolved when witnesses have either identified the perpetrator or reported different facts than those reported by the claimant.
